Wearing my Heart on my Sleeve

For my final honours year project, I asked myself: how can I as a designer illustrate the intimate nature of tattoos, engaging with modern evolution while also paying homage to culture and history? Wearing my Heart on my Sleeve allowed me to reconnect with the cultural heritage I’ve shunned for years due to assimilation and fear of inadequacy.

Communication design can be used to explore the complex nature of identity within the cultural diaspora in Aotearoa. I will examine this through the medium of tattoos in hopes of elevating and celebrating them as a valid form of self-expression as well as exposing a relatively unconventional tool to reclaim
cultural heritage.
